Coastal Flooding and Tornado Warnings Plague Charleston, Breaking Records
Charleston, South Carolina, experienced near-record coastal flooding on Sunday as a powerful storm system and high tide combined to create problems throughout the city. The tide in the Charleston Harbor reached 9.86 feet, the highest on record not associated with a tropical cyclone and topped only by hurricanes Hugo, Irma, and an unnamed 1940 storm. Officials urged motorists to stay off roadways due to flash flooding, and several roads in downtown Charleston were closed. The storm system is expected to continue bringing high winds, coastal flooding, and severe weather as it moves up the East Coast.
