The MTA has debuted new R211 subway cars with an "open gangway" design on the C line in Upper Manhattan, featuring wider doorways and more space to allow for easier movement between cars and improved accessibility for riders with disabilities, wheelchairs, or strollers. While the new design aims to address overcrowding and deter dangerous behaviors like subway surfing, it also presents challenges in the event of mechanical defects.
