The FBI's 2024 report shows a decrease in all crime categories, including violent crimes and property crimes, with notable drops in murder, robbery, and motor vehicle thefts, indicating an overall downward trend in U.S. crime rates, though some challenges like online crimes and hate crimes persist.
Elon Musk tweeted that downtown San Francisco feels "post-apocalyptic" due to the closure of many retail establishments, including Nordstrom's flagship store and a nearby Nordstrom Rack location. The closures have been blamed on unsafe conditions and rampant shoplifting, as well as changing retail shopping habits and a pivot to remote work that has emptied downtown of workers. While San Francisco statistically has less violent crime than other major cities, property crime remains high.
