Pickens had previously stabbed his stepfather with a butcher knife, leaving him with critical injuries. He had been institutionalized multiple times before the attack on Dr. Mauck. The motive for the targeted attack remains unknown. Pickens is currently facing charges of first-degree murder and is being held on a $1.2 million bond.
