Hamilton tops final day as Mercedes leads Barcelona shakedown mileage

Lewis Hamilton set the final-day unofficial fastest lap (1:16.348) as Mercedes led the Barcelona shakedown with the week’s most mileage (over 500 laps across three days) in a mileage-focused prelude to Bahrain. Charles Leclerc topped the morning times (1:16.653) with Lando Norris (1:16.594) and Oscar Piastri close behind before Hamilton sealed top spot after a late switch to soft tyres. Ferrari engines were second in mileage and Red Bull Ford Powertrains third, with Max Verstappen returning on Friday for 69 laps (best 1:18.285) after Isack Hadjar’s crash earlier in the week. Aston Martin drew attention for its distinctive sidepod/engine-cover design; Williams were absent due to production delays, while Haas, Audi and Cadillac also ran. No red flags interrupted the day as teams prepare for Bahrain on 11–13 February.

Aston Martin and Honda's F1 Partnership: Challenges and Opportunities.

Aston Martin's decision to switch to Honda power units in 2026 was driven by the desire to be in charge of its own destiny in terms of power unit supply, according to Aston Martin Performance Technologies CEO Martin Whitmarsh. The move will allow the team to fully integrate its chassis and power unit packages, which is seen as crucial under the next set of regulations. The decision also takes away the necessity to share a power unit and other associated parts with a key rival, which creates an "incompatibility," according to Whitmarsh.

Aston Martin and Honda team up for F1 return in 2026.

Honda will return to Formula 1 in 2026 as the works power unit supplier to Aston Martin, after leaving the sport at the end of 2021. Honda was enticed by the requirement to use 100% sustainable fuels and the greater focus on electrical power, as it delivered synergies with the automotive company's goals. Honda will work with Aston Martin to develop an engine bespoke for the team, while Mercedes will continue to supply Aston Martin with power units, plus the gearbox and rear suspension, until the end of 2025.
