Sam Bankman-Fried's Troubling Incarceration in Brooklyn's Notorious Jail
Sam Bankman-Fried, the founder of bankrupt cryptocurrency exchange FTX, will be held in Brooklyn's Metropolitan Detention Center (MDC) before his fraud trial, following a ruling by U.S. District Judge Lewis Kaplan. MDC has a history of poor conditions, including staffing shortages, power outages, and maggots in inmates' food. Inmates such as Ghislaine Maxwell and Honduras' former president have complained about the subpar conditions. Bankman-Fried's lawyers had requested he be housed in a minimum-security jail in Putnam County, but Kaplan deemed it "doable." Bankman-Fried's lawyers have also requested that MDC provide him with daily prescription medications for depression and attention deficit hyperactive disorder.
