Foiled Plot: Indian Man Charged in Attempted Murder-for-Hire Against Sikh Activist in New York
An Indian national, Nikhil Gupta, has been charged by federal prosecutors in Manhattan with attempting to kill a U.S. citizen who is a Sikh separatist. The indictment alleges that the plot was devised by an Indian agent, potentially straining relations between the U.S. and India. This comes after Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau accused the Indian government of involvement in the June killing of another Sikh separatist in Vancouver. The target in New York was identified as Gurpatwant Singh Pannun, general counsel for the New York-based group Sikhs for Justice. The charges highlight concerns about the safety of Sikh activists and the potential involvement of foreign governments in their targeting.
