Kenneth Anger, the experimental filmmaker, Hollywood historian, and occultist, passed away recently. Many of his important works, including Fireworks, Scorpio Rising, Kustom Kar Kommandos, Inauguration of the Pleasure Dome, and Lucifer Rising, are available on YouTube. Despite the low quality, the furtive, legally dicey energy of Anger's work adds to its charm. Anger's use of popular music, queer and occult themes, and audacious use of color influenced later filmmakers such as Martin Scorsese and John Waters.
