Ethiopia Successfully Fills Controversial Nile Renaissance Mega-Dam
Ethiopia has announced the completion of the filling of its Grand Renaissance Dam on the Nile, sparking condemnation from Egypt. The $4.2 billion dam has been a source of dispute between Ethiopia, Egypt, and Sudan, with downstream countries fearing a reduction in their share of Nile water. Egypt has called the filling illegal and believes the dam poses an existential threat as it relies on the Nile for 97% of its water needs. Negotiations between the three countries recently resumed after a lengthy break, aiming to reach an agreement that considers the interests of all parties.
