News Organizations Establish AI Guidelines for Journalists
The Associated Press (AP) has released guidelines for its journalists on the use of generative AI in news gathering. AP emphasizes that AI is not meant to replace journalists but rather to assist them. Journalists are allowed to experiment with AI tools but are cautioned against using them to create publishable content. Any output from AI platforms should be treated as unvetted source material and subject to AP's existing sourcing standards. AP will not allow AI to alter photos, videos, or audio, and will only use AI-generated images if they are the subject of a news story, clearly labeling them as such. Journalists are also advised to avoid using AI-generated content for spreading misinformation and to verify the veracity of the content they use.
