UN Approves International Security Mission to Combat Haitian Gangs
The United Nations Security Council has authorized a foreign security mission to assist Haiti in combating violent gangs that have taken control of its capital, Port-au-Prince. The mission, called the Multinational Security Support mission, has been granted the authority to take all necessary measures, including the use of force. China and Russia abstained from the vote due to concerns about the use of force, while the remaining 13 members voted in favor. The Security Council also expanded the UN arms embargo to include all gangs, and the US government plans to provide $100 million in logistical and financial assistance to support the mission. The deployment timeline is yet to be determined.
