Former Guinea dictator Camara escapes from prison in armed raid, sparking chaos in the capital
Former Guinea dictator Moussa "Dadis" Camara has escaped from prison in a jailbreak orchestrated by gunmen who stormed the main prison in the capital city of Conakry. The country's justice minister announced the closure of Guinea's borders and vowed to hold those responsible accountable. Camara, who came to power in a 2008 coup, had been detained in connection with a stadium massacre during his time in office. He had lived in exile before returning home in 2021. The government had previously tried to prevent his return, but a military junta took power in a coup in 2021 that was more supportive of Camara.
