NYC Schools Welcome Influx of Migrant Students on First Day
On the first day of school in New York City, some schools were forced to turn away students as they grappled with an influx of migrant children seeking asylum, with about 21,000 expected to join already overcrowded classrooms. Teachers expressed frustration with the lack of organization and capacity issues, while many parents remained hopeful. The Department of Education provided minimal guidance to teachers on how to handle the situation, leaving them to procure additional supplies and bridge language barriers on their own. The DOE has hired additional teachers to address the needs of English language learners and bilingual students.
