UK kicks off first Town of Culture contest to celebrate local spots
The UK has launched its inaugural Town of Culture competition to boost local pride. Three finalists will be chosen by an expert panel, with the winner receiving £3m and two runners-up £250k each; shortlisted towns get £60k to develop bids. The winning town will start a year-long cultural programme in 2028. Eligible towns of all sizes (excluding Greater London) can apply, with finalists to include one small, one medium, and one large town. Shortlisting is planned for spring, with the winner announced by early 2027. The effort aims to amplify local stories and culture across the country.
