Authorized Pentagon flight causes sonic boom heard across DC area.
Jet fighters were scrambled to pursue a Cessna Citation that violated airspace in the Washington D.C. area, causing a sonic boom over the capital. The aircraft later crashed into mountainous terrain in southwest Virginia, but officials say the fighters did not cause the crash. The Cessna can carry between seven to 12 passengers.
