Decades of Illegal Dog Fighting: Puerto Rican Man Sentenced to 7 Years in Prison
Antonio Casillas Montero, the owner of Stone City Kennels in Puerto Rico, has been sentenced to seven years in prison for breeding dogs for illegal fighting for over 35 years. Casillas exhibited "extraordinary cruelty," allowing dogs to die from their injuries instead of removing them from fights that sometimes lasted over an hour. He also injected dogs with steroids and obtained health certificates from certain veterinarians to transport them for fights worldwide. Dogfighting is an open secret in Puerto Rico, and the willingness of some veterinarians to aid Casillas facilitated his years of illegal activities.
