Horn & Rhode's experimental tool called HueForge treats colored, melted filament like paint to create 3D prints that do not look like 3D prints. The printer creates a mostly flat image similar to a lithophane, but with color blending in highly precise ways by printing extremely thin layers. The process requires manual effort and a tool called FilaScope to measure filament transmissivity. The results can be striking and create things that look nothing like traditional 3D prints. The concept is still searching for a name.
