Alderson Broaddus Faces Closure as Operations Wind Down

The state Higher Education Policy Commission (HEPC) has voted to revoke Alderson Broaddus University's authorization to confer degrees, effective December 31, 2023, and has directed the financially troubled school to wind down its operations. The school will not be able to admit new or returning students, except for graduating seniors. The decision comes after HEPC officials discovered the school's negative cash flow, significant debt, and difficulty in meeting payroll. The fear was that the school would close mid-semester, leaving students without tuition, financial aid, or academic progress. Davis and Elkins College and West Virginia Wesleyan have already committed to accepting AB students.

Alderson Broaddus University Loses Degree Granting Authority

The West Virginia Higher Education Policy Commission (HEPC) has unanimously revoked Alderson Broaddus University's authorization to award degrees due to the institution's financial condition, rendering it unable to provide a stable and safe learning environment. The university will not be allowed to enroll new students starting from Fall 2023, but seniors scheduled to graduate in the same term may return to complete their degrees. The university's Board of Trustees has voted to develop a plan of dissolution, and more details will be communicated regarding the assistance provided to students, faculty, and staff affected by this decision.
