Schools Across Midwest Close Early Due to Extreme Heat
The Johnston Community School District in Iowa closed early on the first day of school due to excessive heat and inadequate cooling in some buildings. Secondary schools dismissed at 11:50 a.m. and elementary schools at 1 p.m., with buses taking students home and child care remaining open until 5 p.m. Other schools in Iowa have also curbed outdoor activities and adjusted schedules due to the heat wave.
