"Ex-New Bedford Fire Chief Fatally Shot in Fairhaven Police Encounter"
Paul Coderre, the former acting fire chief of New Bedford, was killed in a shootout with police after an altercation at a Fairhaven bar. An Acushnet police officer was also shot in the leg but was later released from the hospital. The incident occurred following a dispute inside the bar, which escalated outside when Coderre, who had been drinking, was confronted while trying to drive. Non-lethal attempts to subdue him failed, and after Coderre fired his gun, police responded with deadly force. Coderre had been previously fired for alleged abuse of the fire department's leave policy but had his termination overturned by the Civil Service Commission.
