The U.S. Department of Education has fined Liberty University $14 million, the largest penalty on record, for violating the federal campus crime-reporting law, the Clery Act. The university failed to comply with requirements to record and warn about campus crimes and dangerous situations, with violations including discouraging students from reporting crimes, inadequate response to sexual violence incidents, and failure to inform the campus about criminal activities or dangerous situations. In addition to the fine, the settlement requires Liberty to spend $2 million on campus safety improvements over a two-year federal monitoring period.
