Colombia's ELN Rebels and Government Initiate Historic Six-Month Ceasefire

Colombia's largest remaining armed rebel group, the ELN, has entered into a six-month ceasefire with the government, marking a significant victory for President Gustavo Petro's peace plan. The ceasefire, set to run until February, is the result of ongoing peace talks and aims to prevent violence and human rights abuses. If successful, it will be the longest bilateral ceasefire ever concluded with a guerrilla group. The United Nations Security Council has unanimously passed a resolution to renew and expand an observer mission to monitor the ceasefire. Colombians living in violence-plagued areas cautiously express hope for true peace.

ELN rebels kill 9 Colombian soldiers, jeopardizing peace talks.

Nine Colombian soldiers were killed and eight others injured in an attack on an army base in Norte de Santander province by rebels from the National Liberation Army (ELN). The attack is the deadliest since peace talks resumed between the government and the ELN in November. President Gustavo Petro, who aims to bring "total peace" to Colombia, has summoned the government delegation and guarantor countries involved in the peace negotiations for a meeting on Monday to discuss the future of the peace process.
