"Survivors Commemorate Auschwitz Liberation on Holocaust Remembrance Day"

Survivors of Nazi death camps, along with state officials and other participants, marked the 79th anniversary of the liberation of the Auschwitz-Birkenau camp in Poland. Observances were also held in many other countries, with commemorations in Germany, Italy, Ukraine, and Bosnia-Herzegovina. The theme of the observances was the suffering of the individual human being, and the day served as a reminder to fight against antisemitism, racism, and for democracy. The survivors laid wreaths, lit candles, and prayed at the memorial site, memorializing around 1.1 million camp victims, mostly Jews.
