Italian Nazi victims to receive long-awaited compensation after 80 years

Eighty years after the brutal occupation of Italy by Nazi forces, some relatives of Italian victims of war crimes are set to receive compensation of 12 million euros awarded by an Italian court. The compensation is being paid by Italy itself, after losing a battle in the International Court of Justice over whether Germany should be liable for damages. A study estimates that 22,000 Italians were victims of Nazi war crimes, including thousands of Jews deported to death camps. However, victims' groups fear that the 61 million euro fund set up by the Italian government might not be enough to cover all the expected payouts, and the government has the right to review court verdicts before deciding whether to pay out.
