"Heroic Polish Family Honored for Saving Jews in WWII"

The Vatican has beatified the Ulma family, a Polish family of nine who were executed by the Nazis during World War II for sheltering Jews. The Ulmas were killed along with the eight Jews they were hiding after being betrayed. This is the first time an entire family has been beatified. Pope Francis praised the Ulmas as a "ray of light in the darkness" and invited the crowd to applaud them. The beatification poses theological questions about the Catholic Church's ideas of saints and martyrs, particularly regarding the unborn child of Wiktoria Ulma. Poland sees the Ulmas as a symbol of the bravery of Poles who risked their lives to help Jews during the war.
