Great Wall of China vandalized by workers, causing irreversible damage

Two construction workers have been arrested for allegedly using an excavator to tear a hole in the Great Wall of China, causing "irreversible" damage to a section dating back to the Ming Dynasty. The suspects widened the gap to create a shortcut for themselves, but their actions have been deemed destructive to a UNESCO World Heritage Site. They have been charged with destroying a cultural relic, and the damage is said to have compromised the integrity and safety of that portion of the 13,000-mile span.
