Indonesia is set to launch Southeast Asia's first bullet train, a high-speed rail service line connecting Jakarta and Bandung. The $7.3 billion project, funded by Chinese state-owned firms as part of China's Belt and Road initiative, will cut travel time between the two cities from three hours to under an hour. The 86-mile high-speed rail line, named WHOOSH, runs on electricity with no direct carbon emissions and travels at a speed of roughly 217 miles per hour. The trains are equipped with safety systems to respond to emergencies, and there are plans to extend the line to other major cities in Indonesia.
