Indonesian Families Seek Justice and Answers One Year After Stadium Disaster

Families of the victims of the Kanjuruhan Stadium disaster in Indonesia marked the one-year anniversary of the tragedy with a candlelit vigil at the stadium, demanding justice. The tragedy occurred when tear gas was fired into the stands and onto the pitch, resulting in the deaths of 135 people and injuring over 400. The use of tear gas is prohibited inside stadiums under FIFA rules. While some individuals have been sentenced for negligence, families and human rights groups feel that justice has not been fully served, as other police officers and match officials have not been prosecuted.
