Mexican City Cracks Down on Misogynistic Songs with Heavy Fines

The city council of Chihuahua, Mexico, has unanimously approved a measure to ban performances of songs that promote violence against women, citing high levels of domestic violence. Fines for non-compliance will range from 674,000 pesos to 1.244 million pesos. The law aims to combat the normalization of violence against women and will be enforced at events requiring a permit. Funds collected will support gender equality initiatives and a local women's refuge. The ban could potentially affect genres like reggaeton and narcocorridos, which have drawn criticism for explicit and sexist lyrics. Chihuahua state has seen 24 femicides this year.
