Israeli police have arrested five individuals, including one minor, following an uproar over Orthodox Jews spitting at Christian pilgrims in the Old City of Jerusalem. One person was charged with assault, while the others were arrested for unlawful disorderly conduct. The incidents of spitting, which occur frequently near a monastery along the Via Dolorosa, have been condemned by Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and the Palestinian Authority Ministry of Foreign Affairs. Israel Police have established a special investigation team and are considering imposing fines to address the issue. Jerusalem Police District Commander Doron Turgeman called for the involvement of educational, religious, and parental authorities to address the problem.
