Historic Hong Kong Church Raises China's Flag on National Day

St John's Cathedral, the oldest church building in Hong Kong, displayed the Chinese national flag for the first time during a service to mark National Day. The move was suggested by lawmaker Peter Koon, who is also a cathedral chaplain. While there was some online debate and a petition against the display, Koon stated that it was important to pray for the country and that the church had always wanted to "express more" on National Day. The display of the flag comes amid concerns about eroding religious freedoms in Hong Kong under the Beijing-imposed national security law.
