Council officers have been asked to publish a report on governance options, including exploring Nordic connections and crown dependencies. While the prime minister's spokesperson rejected the idea of loosening ties with the union, Council leader James Stockan emphasized the need for greater financial security and economic opportunities. Orkney Islands Council previously voted in 2017 to investigate greater autonomy, but did not support full independence.
