Iceland's Volcanic Eruption Causes Flight Delays and Blazing Lava Fissure

A volcano erupted in Iceland, creating a miles-long fissure that spewed lava and smoke. Aerial footage captured the eruption, showing fountains of lava and an enormous plume of smoke. The glow of the eruption could be seen from Iceland's capital, Reykjavík, which is approximately 25 miles away. The eruption is estimated to have discharged hundreds of cubic meters of lava per second in the first two hours. The town of Grindavik, located less than two miles from the fissure, had been evacuated in November due to earthquakes and steam emissions. The eruption is not expected to have the same impact as the Eyjafjallajökull eruption in 2010, which disrupted air travel in Western Europe for weeks.
