Russian Anti-War Journalist Sentenced to 8.5 Years in Prison

Russian journalist Marina Ovsyannikova, who gained international attention for protesting against the war in Ukraine during a live TV broadcast, has been sentenced to eight and a half years in jail in absentia. She was found guilty of spreading disinformation about Russia's military for holding a poster that criticized President Vladimir Putin and the Russian soldiers' actions in Ukraine. Ovsyannikova and her daughter have fled the country. In other news, German Chancellor Olaf Scholz expressed confidence in continued US support for Ukraine despite political uncertainty in the US Congress, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy stated that Ukraine is working to acquire additional air defense systems before winter, NATO called for increased arms production to address depleted stockpiles, and Ukraine claimed responsibility for a drone attack on a Russian S-400 air defense system.
