Canada Implements Stricter Financial Requirements and Extended Work Hours for International Students

Canada's minister of immigration, refugees and citizenship, Marc Miller, has announced that starting from January 1, 2024, individuals applying for study permits in Canada will need to show they have $20,635 as proof of funds, in addition to their first year of tuition and travel costs. This is a 100% increase from the current requirement of $10,000, which has remained unchanged for nearly two decades. The adjustment aims to prevent student vulnerability and exploitation, and the cost-of-living requirement will now be annually adjusted based on Statistics Canada's updates to the low-income cut-off.
