Thousands Gather for Ritual Sacrifice at Indonesian Volcano

Thousands of Hindu worshippers from the Tengger tribe in Indonesia scaled Mount Bromo to offer livestock, food, and other offerings into its smoking crater as part of the Yadnya Kasada festival. The centuries-old religious ceremony is believed to bring luck to the Tenggerese people. The festival has its roots in 15th-century folklore from the Majapahit kingdom, and legend has it that a princess and her husband sacrificed their youngest child by throwing him into Mount Bromo to guarantee the prosperity of the Tengger people.
