Ethiopians in the historic city of Gondar celebrated the Ethiopian Orthodox Christian festival of Timket, marking the baptism of Jesus in the River Jordan, despite recent conflicts in the Amhara region. The festivities included pre-sunrise rituals, baptisms in a pool, and processions with replicas of the Ark of Covenant. Armed police officers stood guard during the celebrations.
