Officials Arrested and Jailed in Libya Over Deadly Dam Collapse and Flood

The mayor of Derna, Libya, has been arrested along with seven other local officials over accusations of mismanagement and negligence following the collapse of two dams that resulted in the deaths of thousands of people. The dams, which were meant to hold back water from a river flowing through the city, were not repaired due to the civil war that erupted after the fall of Muammar Gaddafi in 2011. Conflicting reports on the death toll range from 11,300 to over 10,000 missing individuals.
