Ugandan peacekeepers suffer heavy casualties in Al-Shabaab attack.

Al-Shabaab militants attacked an African Union base in Somalia, killing 54 Ugandan peacekeepers, including a commander, in one of the deadliest attacks in recent years. The attack was claimed by Al-Shabaab, which has been fighting against Somalia's central government for over a decade. The African Union force, known as ATMIS, has been supporting pro-government forces in their fight against Al-Shabaab since last August. The goal of ATMIS is to hand over security responsibilities to Somalia's army and police by 2024.
