Veteran police lieutenant wounded protecting Michigan synagogue during antisemitic rampage

A security guard at Temple Israel in Michigan, Danny Phillips—a former Bloomfield Hills police lieutenant with 28 years on the force—was injured when an armed antisemitic attacker rammed the synagogue and opened fire; the assailant, Ayman Mohamad Ghazali, later killed himself after being repelled by security. The temple’s beefed-up security, which includes in-house guards, metal detectors, hired guards, police, and drones, helped prevent a far larger tragedy as children were inside the preschool. Phillips was hospitalized, and officials praised the swift, effective security response.
