Tech Giants Grapple with Israel-Hamas Disinformation and Graphic Content

The European Commission has sent a letter to Google and YouTube, warning them about the dissemination of graphic content and misinformation related to the Israel and Hamas conflict. The letter reminds the tech giants of their content moderation obligations under the European Union's Digital Services Act (DSA), particularly in protecting minors from violent content and controlling disinformation. The European Commissioner for Internal Market, Thierry Breton, emphasized the need for appropriate measures to ensure privacy, safety, and security for minors, as well as effective mitigation efforts against disinformation. Breton also warned of potential penalties if the companies fail to comply with the DSA. Google and YouTube have stated that they are reviewing the letter and have already removed thousands of harmful videos.
