Sirens sounded and an "air raid alert" was sent via text message, prompting citizens to evacuate to safety immediately. China, which considers Taiwan its territory, has been conducting regular exercises around the island to pressure Taipei into accepting its sovereignty claim. The drill involved various measures, including seeking shelter in basement parking lots with hands covering eyes and ears while keeping mouths open to minimize the impact of blast waves from missiles. Other parts of Taiwan will carry out street evacuation drills this week.
