Disney's 'Wish' Revives 2D Legacy with a Magical Tribute to 100 Years

Disney Animation celebrates its 100th anniversary with "Wish," a musical fantasy that merges the 2D legacy of watercolor background paintings with cutting-edge CG. The film pays tribute to Walt Disney's ethos about hopes and dreams and features a unique watercolor look for both characters and environments. The team utilized a combination of hand-drawn linework, projection methods, and a multiplane camera effect to create depth and movement within the watercolor backgrounds. They also developed a system called "Dynamic Screen Space Texturing" to provide consistency in the watercolor pigment and paper texture. The film showcases the magic effects of Magnifico and Star, which were traditionally animated and then translated into finished CG shots. "Wish" is currently in theaters.
