Violence Erupts at New Mexico Protest Over Conquistador Statue

A shooting occurred at a protest in New Mexico over the installation of a statue of a conquistador, leaving one person injured. The suspect, who was reportedly wearing a red "Make America Great Again" hat earlier in the day, was apprehended by sheriff's deputies after fleeing the scene. The injured man, a Native American, was taken to the hospital. The statue of Juan de Oñate, a controversial figure known for instigating a massacre of Native Americans, was removed in 2020 but was set to be reinstalled this week. The shooting took place during an altercation between protesters and counter-protesters. This is not the first time a shooting has occurred in relation to a conquistador statue in New Mexico.
