A 17-year-old Chinese exchange student, Kai Zhuang, was found in a tent in the Utah wilderness after falling victim to a cyber kidnapping scam that extorted $80,000 from his parents. He was discovered "cold and scared" by a sergeant who was part of a search operation that included analyzing bank records and phone pings. After being rescued, Kai requested a warm cheeseburger and to speak with his family. The Riverdale Police Department, FBI, US embassy in China, and Chinese officials collaborated in the search and rescue effort. Cyber kidnappers have increasingly targeted Chinese foreign exchange students.
