Child Deaths and Drug Exposures: Disturbing Incidents at Day Cares Raise Concerns

Grei Mendez, the owner of Divino Niño Daycare in the Bronx, and Carlisto Acevedo Brito, her husband's cousin, are facing multiple charges, including murder, in the death of a 1-year-old boy at the daycare. The child died and three others were hospitalized due to suspected opioid exposure. A kilo of fentanyl and drug processing equipment were found at the daycare, and at least one surviving child tested positive for fentanyl. Mendez, who claims she was unaware of the situation, was denied bail, while Acevedo Brito is expected to be arraigned soon. The official cause of death has yet to be determined.
