Apple quietly upgraded the wireless charging capabilities of iPhone 12 with the release of iOS 17.4, allowing users to charge their handsets much faster even with suitable third-party wireless charging pads, previously restricted to Apple-authorized devices. This upgrade, based on Qi2 technology, enables iPhone 12 to charge at 15W with compatible pads, and while not officially announced, it offers users more affordable charging options from third-party manufacturers. The upgrade is not available for iPhone 12 mini and iPhone 13 mini, which charge up to only 12W with standard Qi.
