Sega's Shift Away from Blockchain Games Sparks Controversy

Sega has announced that it is abandoning most of its crypto-related plans, including third-party blockchain projects and in-house blockchain games. The company's co-Chief Operating Officer, Shuji Utsumi, stated that play-to-earn games are boring and not fun, leading to the decision to put potential crypto and NFT products on hold. While Sega is avoiding blockchain for its popular IPs like Sonic the Hedgehog and Yakuza, it is open to third-party NFT creators using less popular IPs. The move comes as other game companies, such as Square Enix and Ubisoft, have also scaled back or altered their blockchain plans, realizing the fiscal and design limitations of NFTs and blockchain technology.
