Kirby director Shinya Kumazaki has compared Kirby and the Forgotten Land to The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild, stating that it marks a turning point for the franchise as its first true attempt at 3D gameplay. However, Kumazaki emphasized that the focus will always be on providing the best possible gameplay experience, whether in 2D or 3D. Kirby's Blowout Blast on 3DS was the first time the studio was comfortable enough to go full-on with 3D in Kirby and the Forgotten Land.
