Over 500 hopefuls competed for 120 spots as ball people for the U.S. Open during a week of tryouts, showcasing their speed, agility, and ability to blend into the background of the tournament. Ranging in age from 14 to their mid-70s, applicants from all over the country participated in drills to quickly and quietly roll, retrieve, and toss balls.
